Hotelmania

If I had a lamp with magic wishes I'd ask for a chef to cook the dishes, Someone to serve and clear away So I could relax,  enjoy my day. I'd ask for luxury,  expensive treats,  So I could sit, put up my feet, Somewhere away from tasks and duty  Surrounded by delights and beauty.  I'd ask for excitement,  frissons,  thrills Where I could have every wish fulfilled.  Where would this be? Can't you tell? I'd ask to stay in an hotel.  © Copyright 2022. Chris Auger. All. Rights Reserved

In the presence of Brian Bilston

At the last minute I decided to go to see Brian Bilston perform at the Bath Festival.  Unfortunately it was too late notice for any of my friends to come along,  but it was still a nice trip out!  Last minute tickets I had found And drove, excited, into town To board the Landsdown Park and Ride And watch the drizzle, drip down outside.  I had an hour,  which seemed an age Before the poet took the stage, So coffee and cake (zucchini and lime) Rather nicely filled the time.  A polite, low buzz filled the room -  A middle class audience I presume - As I dashed down these lines, with all their flaws In time for his entry,  and our applause.  All too soon the hour was ended The time alas, could not be extended For all our questions; instead we queued To get our books signed, it would be rude Not to.  The poet was humble, polite and kind, To all that offered him their books to sign,  He even found time to wish me well -  And I fell much deeper beneath his spell.   © Copyright 2022. Sticky situations

This came to me as I  was struggling to get dressed after swimming -  no matter how much I towel off I always find my skin sticks to my clothes!  My mind went off on a wander,  to discover other sticky situations.   Hot tar on a summer afternoon, Paint, almost but not quite dry,  A young child's eager hands,  The side of a marmalade jar,  Ice lolly melting down a stick,  Towelled skin after swimming,  Car windscreens parked under trees,  A pub floor after a busy night,  Honey, dripping out the side of a sandwich, Sellotape wrapping clumsy fingers,  Me, admitting I'm at fault.  © Copyright 2022. Succession

Today was the State opening of Parliament, with Prince Charles standing in for the Queen,  so I thought I'd watch it on TV. While the pomp and ceremony of the occasion was indicative of the longevity of the monarchy,  it rather brought home the mortality of individual monarchs.  Amid the pageant, the red and gold, The Prince of Wales is looking old.  Although the Queen's not stepping down She's represented by her Crown.  A sign of things to come,  alas, Elizabethan rule is almost past.  We'll rally round King Charles, until, It is the time for good King Will.  © Copyright 2022.
