Finding time

Day19: write a poem that starts with a command. It could be as uncomplicated as “Look,” as plaintive as “Come back,” or as silly as “Don’t you even think about putting that hot sauce in your hair.” Whatever command you choose, I hope you have fun ordering your readers around.

I have a busy day ahead of me,  so I'm addressing this one to myself!

Hurry up!
Don't waste time looking out the window
Those birds will fly from lilac tree to feeders
Without your supervision, will trill their rippling song
Regardless of your need to identify its source.
You're too busy.

Hurry up!
You have breakfast to eat and a poem to write,
Sticky-fingered with the marmalade you made
Last winter.  Get those words flowing fast
Even as you crunch into the toast, from the bread you made
On Sunday.

Hurry up!
Remember you have booked into the gym at 10am
You don't have time for elegant phrasing
Complicated rhyme and rhythm -
Just get something down on your tablet
Fast.

Hurry up!
Don't forget you are organising an art group
This afternoon. People are relying on you to be there
To talk about who will show which piece at the exhibition
And plan what new artwork you need to have ready
By June.

Relax!
Today has some small spaces for contemplation.
Perhaps while pounding on the treadmill,
Or while trying to capture an image in pencil,
Or while standing under the shower, washing your hair.
You'll find time.
