Feint and Parry
Day 21: write a poem in which something that normally unfolds in a set and well understood way — like a baseball game or dance recital – goes haywire, but is described as if it is all very normal.
I've chosen to write about the last few years of my first marriage in terms of a fencing match.
We moved hesitantly for years,
Your feint, my parry,
Circling, provoking, inviting;
The distance between us carefully judged
Too far apart for lasting damage.
Until, too tired of deflection,
I laid down my ultimatum
Ending our dance for good.
