Day 14: 'write a parody or satire based on a famous poem. It can be long or short, rhymed or not. But take a favorite (or unfavorite) poem of the past, and see if you can’t re-write it on humorous, mocking, or sharp-witted lines. You can use your poem to make fun of the original (in the vein of a parody), or turn the form and manner of the original into a vehicle for making points about something else (more of a satire).'
This is meant to be "a bit of Friday fun" but sounds like hard work to me! The poem that sprang to mind was The Subaltern's Love Song by John Betjeman so I've given it a bit of an update, and shortened it to suit more modern attention spans.
A Cybernaut's Complaint
Oh @leopardspotlacey, oh @leopardspotlacey
Or (as most people know you), just plain Tracey,
What exciting lewd sexts we sent when both safe online
You in your bedroom, me in mine.
Back and forth they whizzed breathlessly over the cloud
With photos and promises, we both were quite wowed,
After WhatsApp, Snapchat and good old FaceTime
We decided to meet up, we thought we'd be fine.
We would meet in a bar we both knew in town
So we could call it quits if conversation ran down
We'd go on to a club, and dance till we dropped
The Travelodge was quite close, if neither wanted to stop.
But how I cursed you that night, my dreams all off kilter
When I rued just how easily you'd applied a strong filter,
I vowed never to meet up, real face to real face,
But to stay on the internet, in fantasy space.
